• Late Comedy Showdown

    Since its inception in 2007, Late Comedy Showdown has grown into one of our most popular late night events.

What is Late Comedy Showdown?

Whether you're a comedy enthusiast ready to showcase your skills on stage or a fan eager for a night of non-stop laughter, this event is your chance to experience the best in anime-inspired humor. This is an 18+ event, so anyone participating and watching, be sure to get your 18+ wristband at info services!

How to Participate

  • Submit your stand-up act. It doesn’t have to be the full act—a demo reel works too. Aim for something under two minutes, and perform before an audience if possible.

  • Keep an eye out! By May 15th, you'll know if you're approved or waitlisted. If you're waitlisted, be prepared to take any open spots on-site. This is a first-come, first-served opportunity, so stay ready!

  • Prepare your acts!

    • First Round (July 3rd): Perform a one-minute set before a panel of three judges. Out of 13 acts, 7 will be chosen to advance.
    • Second Round (July 5th): If you make it through, you'll perform a 5-minute set, which will be reviewed by the judges.
    • Final Round (July 5th): After an intermission, the top two comedians will be selected to perform another 5-minute set. The judges will review these final performances and select a winner.

Judging Criteria

  • Tie to theme.
    • References to manga, anime, general pop culture tied to Japan.
  • Originality and Creativity
    • Content that seems to streamline fluidly while not being comedy commonly executed.
  • Stage Presence
    • Presentation of voice, impressions, movements, and general presentation on the stage.

Rules

  • Content Guidelines:
    • 18+ Content: Profanity and sexual content are allowed, provided they comply with Youth Protection Program (YPP) policies. Discussions of violence or explicit content involving youth are strictly prohibited. For more details, visit Anime Expo Legal
    • Violence: Promotion of detailed descriptions of violence on the premises is prohibited. Fictional violence is acceptable.
  • Attendance:
    • Participants must attend each session on time. Arrive at least 20 minutes early to avoid delays.
  • Badge Requirement:
    • A valid 4-day badge is required for participation.
  • Rule Violations:
    • Violations during tryouts or finals may result in immediate removal from the stage and the entire event.
